May 1964. A month before my twelfth birthday, I attended my Grandfather’s military funeral. A few days later I turned a spelling assignment into short poem called War. My Grandmother copied it out on a card, which my mother gave to me a few years back. It’s my earliest known literary work.
At the same age I wrote/directed puppet shows and Nativity plays, which were performed in various venues. None of these scripts have survived. A short story and some poetry written in high school were published in the creative writing class journal Epitaph.
